Prescription drug coverage is generally needed by Medicare enrollees because medical practice today relies quite heavily on drug therapies to treat chronic conditions. As a result, most Medicare beneficiaries sooner or later will need prescription drugs to stay healthy. Additionally, it is advisable for a beneficiary to enroll in Part D as soon as first eligible in order to avoid premium penalties.
There are two ways for an individual to get Medicare prescription drug coverage:
• Medicare prescription drug plans, sometimes called “PDPs or Part D Plans”, which are stand-alone plans, but they can be combined with original Medicare, some Medicare Supplement Plans.
• Medicare Advantage Plans that includes Part D Coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes referred to as “MA-PDs”.
